When all you have is one option, you tend to accept it, for good and for bad. For decades, that was the case with braces. There was one option that was the same across the board—save for some slight color customization. Every patient wore it, and many of them were less than satisfied with it, even when it delivered incredible results.
Invisalign was the start of an orthodontic revolution, and while many other appliances have since emerged, Invisalign remains on top. Here is what you need to know about this form of treatment.
How Does Invisalign Work? +

The mechanism of movement with Invisalign isn’t all that different from with braces. With braces, wires direct pressure applied to the teeth to move them. With Invisalign, it is that shape of the aligners that applies the force. The aligners are made from very firm clear plastic, which makes them highly effective at exhorting force. Each aligner is a different shape, which allows that force to change as you move to the next aligner in the series. By the end, the teeth are in their ideal location.
How Is Invisalign Made? +

The process begins with a non-invasive 3D digital scan of the dental anatomy. This scan is then used by Invisalign’s software to generate a treatment plan. The doctor reviews this plan and tweaks it if necessary. Once everything is perfect, you are shown the digital estimate of what treatment will look like step by step, all the way to your new and improved smile. If you approve and wish to start treatment, the files are sent off and the aligners are made.
What Makes Invisalign Great? +
Everyone seems to love Invisalign, but before you jump into treatment, you should know why. The obvious reason is that the aligners are invisible when worn, but there is more to this system than the discreet treatment it offers. Here are the many reasons why our patients love Invisalign treatment.
- It is invisible when worn
- The aligners are more comfortable than metal braces
- Treatment is often faster with Invisalign
- It does not impact speech
- You can remove it when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing
- You make adjustments by swapping out aligners, so you see us less
If these benefits sound good to you, it is time to learn more about this treatment option. Schedule your Invisalign consultation today.

Braces Basics
Every patient is unique in their wants and needs for treatment. That is why taking a one-size-fits-all approach just doesn’t make sense. Luckily, if you come to Orthodontics Only in Moreno Valley, you won’t be confined to a single type of braces; we offer lots of options so your treatment can be an enjoyable experience.
-
Traditional Metal Braces
When people think of braces, this is more or less what they picture in their heads. They are silver and shine bright, but they are made from better metals than in the past. As a result, they are smaller and more effective than earlier versions.
-
Clear Braces
If the idea of braces sounds good, but you still feel they are not discreet enough, you can opt for clear braces. There braces use clear brackets that blend in with the teeth. As a result, they are more difficult for others to see, but they still offer the quality results of the original system.
-
Gold Braces
Not everyone dislikes the look of braces. In fact, it can be fun. But not everyone looks good with silver. For those with warmer tones, gold braces can be a better option. These are traditional braces with a gold coating, making them fun and elegant.
-
Invisalign
Invisalign is an invisible form of treatment that moves the teeth as well as braces when treating mild to moderate dental issues. The aligners fit flush against the teeth, applying pressure through their shape. Treatment goes quickly and is comfortable, making it a popular choice.

Children’s Orthodontic Treatment
At what age do children start orthodontic treatment? That all depends. Most of our young patients will begin their treatment around age 12. However, we do work with some who require early treatment. Here is what parents need to know about treatment for these younger children.
The Importance of Age Seven +

Seven may be a lucky number, but in orthodontics, it is more than that: it is the age when all children should first see an orthodontist. At this age, permanent teeth have begun to come in, and this makes it easy for the doctor to see if significant issues are developing. However, the child will still have lots of growing to do, and that can be used to make treatment more effective. Seeing the doctor at age seven guarantees the largest possible window of opportunity for correcting significant issues.
Why Early Treatment Matters +

Very few children need early treatment, but for those who do, it is vital. Starting treatment with younger children is only suggested when there are severe abnormalities present. The goal is to treat these abnormalities uses appliances only, avoiding the need for surgery and tooth extraction. Early treatment means a better outcome and a better experience for the child.
What Early Treatment Can Accomplish +
- Guide jaw growth
- Reduce risk of trauma from protruding teeth
- Correct poor oral habits
- Improve facial balance
- Correct crossbites
- Guide placement of permanent teeth
- Make it easier to clean teeth
Early Treatment Appliances
- Rapid Palatal Expander: An appliance that can widen both the upper and lower arches.
- Removable Dentofacial-Orthopedic Appliances: This includes bionators, functional appliance, neck gear, head gear, and reverse pull headgear.
- Lingual Arch: A space maintainer on the lower teeth.
- Braces: The traditional form of treatment.
- Invisalign: Used as a braces alternative when suitable.

Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Many adults who have problems with their smile believe that there is nothing to do but live with them. They figure the window of opportunity for treatment closes at the end of the teenage years and their chance is gone. In truth, adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment. About a fifth of all our patients are over the age of 21.
What Stops Adults From Seeking Treatment? +

Many patients have their own unique reasons for not seeking treatment earlier, but in most cases, they come down to three main things:
- They think that they missed their chance for treatment
- They believe braces look unprofessional
- They assume treatment is too costly
However, these are misconceptions. In reality, none of these need to be barriers to seeking treatment.
Addressing the Misconceptions +

Adults can receive orthodontic treatment. The only things that may delay the start of treatment are gum and bone disease. However, these issues can be addressed so that treatment may begin.
As for the look of braces, there are many options beyond traditional metal braces. There are those that are less visible, hidden behind the teeth, or even fully invisible. The look of braces is a non-issue.
As for cost, orthodontic care isn’t cheap, but there are ways to make it more affordable. Insurance, payments plans, and discounts can help it work for you. We can go over these options in person.
